Welcome and thank you for taking the time to learn about The San Francisco School.  Founded by a small group of parents and educators in 1966, we are proud to be one of the oldest independent, coeducational day schools in San Francisco. 

When one enters the front gates of The San Francisco School, there is a sense of intellectual curiosity, imagination, and of playfulness that is immediately palpable.  Students are engaged, asking questions and sharing their ideas in the classroom.  Music cascades throughout the courtyard and art decorates every corner of the campus.  Students of all ages are climbing trees, digging in the dirt and building with their hands.  It does not take long to notice that they love being at school. 

The San Francisco School is a supportive and rigorous academic environment that is committed to developing the full and unique potential of every student.  Our faculty works tirelessly in challenging students to try on the perspectives that historians and writers, mathematicians and linguists, scientists and artists, and athletes and musicians bring to their disciplines. Students experience the ways that scholars from the various fields pose questions; then they pose questions of their own; then they work independently and collaboratively to find the answers.

We are a school that is based on the premise that the diversity of the student, parent and professional community has a direct and positive impact on the overall quality of the student learning experience.  With this in mind, the school continually strives to mirror the diversity of the Bay Area.  And this diversity of thought and backgrounds, family structure and ethnicity creates a learning-community where our students are both respected as individuals, and learn the importance of working as a group.
