Carpool Adjustments and Changes
PG&E is working on our block of Gaven Street this month. Both sides of Gaven Street are reserved for PG&E. Starting immediately, we will be adjusting carpool as indicated below and we may have updates as we proceed:

  • The carpool pick up lane will only be for pickup and driving through, not for waiting.
  • If you arrive at the carpool pick up area and your passenger is not present, you will be directed to go around the block and return to the end of the line.
  • Avoid pulling into the opposing lane of traffic (eastbound) for safety's sake.
  • Before getting in line, please ensure your booster seats and/or other seating arrangements are already in place and secure (do not hold up the moving line by adjusting boosters).
  • Dispense snacks and beverages after pulling away from the line, not while in it.
  • Teachers will be especially alert to releasing children on time (Preschool 2:45 through 3:00 PM; Elementary 3:00 to 3:15 PM, Middle School 3:15 to 3:25 PM).

Return to Booster Seats for Children Under 8 Years of Age
Under California law starting January 1st (this week), children must use car seats until they are 8 years old or 4-feet-9 inches tall, up from the previous requirement of 6 years or 60 pounds. Please ensure all your passengers have booster seats at carpool and for field trips. Note: noncompliance can mean a fine of more than $475 and a point on a driving record, but no prison.

Magnificent Misfits
Wonderful shows at the Brava Theater by the 1st through 5th graders on December 14th and 15th! Bravo to all the actors, who brought the stories of "Elmer the Elephant," "The Bremen Town Musicians," "Strega Nona" and "Sundiata, Lion King of Mali" to life onstage. If you haven't yet ordered a DVD, please do so by January 9th. Send James (jharding@sfschool.org) an email specifying number of DVDs requested ($25/DVD) and your child's name. DVDs will be copied and made available for pick-up at the front desk starting next week.

Walking School Bus Resumes
Our first Walking School Bus of 2012 is on for tomorrow, Thursday, January 5! Get on the bus!

Preschool Parent Ed on Thursday, January 5th, 4:30-6 PM, SFS Activity Room
Please mark your calendars for an exciting and informative event: "Talking to Your Child About Difference" facilitated by Tarah Fleming, creator of Start Dialog: Courses in Cultural Competency. Tara inspires and elicits rich, probing conversations about what "difference" means and how the language we use (or don't use) informs our children. We also welcome early Elementary parents and guardians and anyone interested in and intrigued by this topic!

Teacher Workshop Day – Childcare Available
Please complete a registration form to reserve childcare for the upcoming Teacher Workshop Day on Tuesday, January 17th.

A Reminder to All Parents
Please plan your child’s after school arrangements ahead of time, whenever possible. Last minute phone and email messages to the Front Desk (after noon) are difficult to deliver. Thanks for your consideration.

SFS to Host Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT) Training!
We are thrilled to announce that NERT training will be held at SFS this winter. The goal of this program is to help the citizens of San Francisco be self-sufficient in a major disaster situation by developing multi-functional teams, cross-trained in basic emergency skills. Through this program, individuals will learn hands-on disaster skills that will help them as members of an emergency response team, preparing them to respond to a personal emergency or as an adjunct to the SFFD response. The 20-hour training consists of six class sessions that are approximately 3 hours each. The NERT Training is free to the public but enrollment is limited. Sign up, attend all 6 classes, and feel better prepared at home, work or play! To register, call 970-2024 or visit http://sf-fire.org/index.aspx?page=865. For more information on class schedule and content, click here.

Urgent Help Needed For Creative Arts Charter School
A few days before Christmas a fire next door to the Creative Arts Charter School burned down three buildings, leaving many homeless. The school suffered major smoke and water damage. They lost the entire library, art room and the contents of almost half the classrooms. Some teachers lost decades of teaching materials.
They are desperately in need of books, supplies-paper, pencils, markers, art supplies, sports equipment, laptops, and K 5 books for classroom and school libraries. For more information about how you can help, please visit http://www.creativeartscharter.org/news/fire.asp or contact Barbara at bpollak67@yahoo.com.

The Marsh Youth Theater is offering a free open house Sunday, January 8 from 2- 5 PM. Meet the teachers and sample a variety of classes: drama, trapeze, dance, art.
