Five Totally Awesome Donation Tips
At this stage, we rely on you to consider what creative ways you can come up with to raise money for the auction to help us reach our donation goal of $150,000! This stage can be tough, especially for families new to the school, so here are some helpful tips:

  1. Don’t stress about “5” things. Make it 3 or 4 really excellent things. We need great things that everyone wants to bid on in order to reach our lofty goal!
  2. Leverage your own skills and passions. Donate your time and a skill that someone else will find valuable. Are you a good baker? Donate cookies of the month for a lucky bidder. A basketball player? Donate private 1:1 lessons. These things have real tangible value because they come from you.
  3. Consider things that you alone have access to, but that others would also appreciate. How about a seat in a corporate box at a ballgame? Backstage view at the opera? Chef’s table at a restaurant? You get the idea!
  4. Look around your neighborhood. Many of us frequent the same places and since we go to these places anyway perhaps would be willing to pay just a little bit more knowing that the proceeds are going to our school’s tuition assistance program. Ask local merchants for gift certificates. Even if they say no, they’re more likely to say yes next year if you offer to buy one and donate that yourself.
  5. Think of a way to bring you, your kids and others in the community together. These are the things that people remember and look forward to long after the party has passed. Host a bonfire at Ocean Beach or a hike through Tilden. A trip to Muir woods or a day at Ano Nuevo. Keep it local!

If you are still having difficulties developing items to donate, contact Emily to help you brainstorm (egarlock@sfschool.org, 415.239.1475).

Mega Thanks to Our Business Community!
Many thanks to our local community of businesses and merchants who have already shown their support in the previous weeks by making donations to the auction. Many of these are most likely merchants you frequent and are located in your neighborhoods, so if you get the chance, tell them thank you on behalf of our students!

Click here for a full listing of those businesses and merchants who have donated to our auction to date.

Don't see your favorite business on this list? Are you willing to look over the Auction Business Directory and make a few calls/emails to encourage donations from our business community? Contact Emily for more information (egarlock@sfschool.org).

A Message from the Middle School Student Council
The fire that engulfed two buildings adjacent to the Creative Arts Charter School on December 22nd caused extensive smoke and water damage to the school, resulting in a total loss of six classrooms, art studio, cafeteria space and library. Teachers have lost curriculum, their class libraries and other materials related to teaching and learning. The school has also lost computers, sports equipment, art supplies and office supplies.

The Middle School Student Council will be collecting donations of any paper, pencils, markers, art supplies, sports equipment and K-5 books for classroom and school libraries at CACS. Please drop off all donations in the bin in the SFS library any time during the month of February. Please click here for a wish list from the teachers at Creative Arts Charter School. Thank you!

Junior Counselor Program Summer 2012
As in past years, The San Francisco School is offering our middle school students the opportunity to participate in our summer camps as Junior Counselors. Our teenagers receive leadership training and develop confidence in their caretaking skills while assisting summer camp teachers. If your teenager is interested, please have her/him fill out the Junior Counselor application form and submit it by sending it to SFS or putting it in Harald's mailbox by March 15, 2012. Applicants must be current middle school students. Note that this year's summer program is only 5 weeks long and therefore we will have fewer Junior Counselor positions.

Remember December?
Check out great photos of Magnificent Misfits (1st – 5th grade plays) by alumni parent Mark Johann online at sfschool.smugmug.com/Events/SF-School-2011-Winter/. All purchases from Smugmug benefit the school. Also, DVDs of the plays will be available for pick up at the front desk starting this week. If you forgot to order one, we made some extras ($25 for a two-DVD set of all plays).

Save the Date: Grandparents & Special Friends Day 2012
