ALL SCHOOL

SFS Student Art on Display at SFO!
The San Francisco School is having an art show at the San Francisco International Airport beginning the first week of December and running through the end of January. The exhibit is a selection of 22 of the San Francisco city paintings made by our students at the beginning of the school year. The exhibit space is on the lower level in the baggage claim area of Terminal 1 and runs along the wall parallel to the street. It will be on both sides of the center elevators and escalators in two groups of 11 works each. If you have questions, please ask Karen Goodkin, Ruth Cardillo or Tiphani Russell. We hope you'll get an opportunity to see the exhibit.

Elementary Holiday Plays
Wednesday Night, December 14 Features 1st, 2nd and 3rd Graders, 7-8:30 PM
Thursday Night, December 15 Features 4th and 5th Graders, 7-8:30 PM

Mark your calendars for the Elementary Holiday Plays, performed by 1st through 3rd Graders at the Brava Theater (2781 24th Street, SF) at 7 PM on December 14th and by 4th and 5th Graders on December 15th. The theme this year is "Magnificent Misfits," and the plays celebrate characters that don't fit in. On Wednesday, December 14th, the 1st grade will perform "Elmer the Elephant," (beloved children's book by David McKee), the 2nd Grade will perform "The Bremen Town Musicians" (an adaptation of the Grimm Brothers' folktale), and the 3rd Grade will perform the Italian fable, "Strega Nona." On Thursday, December 15th, the 4th and 5th Grades will combine to present the West African epic, "Sundiata, Lion King of Mali." All plays will feature live music and dance performed by the children. See you at the Brava!

School Calendar
Please see the attached calendar for the 2012-13 school year. This is published earlier than usual with the Community Center Project breaking ground in June 2012. Please note in particular the after Labor Day start. Otherwise, the schedule is generally staying the same.

Deliberate Act of Kindness
Please join the SFS Student Council in supporting the San Francisco Firefighters Toy Program by donating a new unwrapped toy between November 29th and December 16th. The San Francisco Firefighters Toy Program is the largest firefighter toy program in the United States. The program has been in operation since 1949. It started with a couple of firefighters repairing broken bicycles for neighborhood kids. Since that time, the San Francisco Firefighters Toy program has expanded to helping over 40,000 children every year in every neighborhood in San Francisco. Additionally, the San Francisco Firefighters Toy Program distributes toys to the UCSF Pediatric Ward, burn units, schools, and shelters for homeless families and battered women. You will find the SFS donation barrel in the library. If you have any questions, please see Eliza or Isabella, your Co-Vice Presidents (7th grade). Thank you!

Shannon's Winter Camp
Shannon’s Winter Camp runs from December 19th through December 30th, from 9 AM to 4 PM. Please complete a registration form (for one day or all ten days) and submit it with payment by tomorrow, November 30th.

Job Announcement
The school is looking for someone to help co-direct the 8th grade play. If you know of anyone, please have them read the job description at http://www.sfschool.org/life/jobs.shtml.

A Reminder to All Parents – After School Arrangements
Please plan your child’s after school arrangements ahead of time, whenever possible. Last minute phone and email messages to the Front Desk (after noon) may be difficult to deliver. Thanks for your consideration.

We Are So Close to Our Walkathon Goal!
Thank you for all the amazing pledges and donations that have been collected and turned in over the past couple of weeks! Donations can be mailed to the school, turned in at the front desk, or donated directly online at www.sfschool.org/walkathon. There is no cut-off date for Walkathon donations, so we are happy to continue to collect these in order to make our goals! Please contact Emily (egarlock@sfschool.org) with any billing questions or if you would like her to follow up with your sponsors to collect pledges. Thank you!

BOARD OF TRUSTEES & COMMITTEE NEWS

The Alemany Island Beautification Project & The Public Purpose Committee
SFS congratulates the Alemany Island Beautification Project, which was honored last week at City Hall for winning the Neighborhood Empowerment Network's "Best 2011 Community Challenge Grant" award! The project consists of a Portola Welcome sign, a stunning mural depicting endangered species (San Francisco Garter Snake and Mission Blue Butterfly) and a garden below the mural. The next phase of the project will be 50 murals installed on fences at the same intersection. Four of the murals will come from our SFS community. On display in our own courtyard last week was "The Gardener" painted by the 4th graders under the guidance of Karen Goodkin. Also working on these murals are Tiphani Russell, Francisco Hernandez, Dolores Elkin and the North class students.

The Public Purpose Committee collaborates on neighborhood projects such as these. If you are interested in a neighborhood project, service learning, environmental action (including but not limited to alternative transportation) or social justice, please attend our next meeting on Thursday, December 1st, from 5:30-7 PM in the Math Room (next to the Library). Contact Ellen Fey for more information or to RSVP (ebfey@mac.com).
