Get Excited... The Walkathon is Right Around the Corner on Sunday, September 25th!
Marx Meadow, Golden Gate Park. Registration begins at 10 AM, the Walkathon starts at 11 AM and the All School Picnic follows the walk at noon.
This year's Walkathon will raise funds for
indoor and outdoor campus projects and facility refurbishments, as well as staff-designated special projects! Start thinking about family and friends you can ask to sponsor your SFS student(s) now!
Watch for a Walkathon Information Packet – coming to your family this week! This packet will include general information, pledging and billing guidelines, and a family pledge form. All information and materials will also be posted online at sfschool.org/walkathon, and will be available at the Walkathon Materials Station at the Front Desk at school later this week.
Mark your calendars now – Walkathon t-shirt sales will begin on Tuesday, September 20th at morning and afternoon carpool. Watch for more information to follow in the TNH!
Individual Photo Day – Friday, September 16th
Individual Photo Day is Friday, September 16th for 1st through 8th Grades only. Only Class Pictures are taken of our Preschool-Kindergarten students.
We are using Mugshots again this year, so the ordering process will be familiar to most of you. No ordering forms will be sent home prior to September 16th. Instead, approximately 2 weeks after the individual photos are taken, you will receive a "Proof Ordering Envelope" for your child. You will then be able to choose which picture(s) you would like to order from the proofs sent to you, and possibly from other proofs of your child online at Mugshots' website. Additional information about this ordering procedure will be contained in the Proof Ordering Envelope, as well as in a future TNH.
Class Pictures will be taken on Wednesday, October 12th for all students – Preschool/Kindergarten, Elementary, and Middle School. This will also be the make-up day for anyone who did not have their individual photo taken on September 16th.
Request from the 5th Grade
The 5th Grade begins the school year investigating systems. Therefore, we are once again in search of old broken down mechanical devises that the students can dissect. Do you have an old bike, vacuum cleaner, sewing machine, typewriter, or similar machine collecting dust at home? Bring it in and we will put it to good use. Devices that are mostly electronic are not useful because we cannot investigate them directly. Anything with a lot of moving parts works well. If in doubt, contact Francisco (fhernandez@sfschool.org).
Walking School Bus
The Walking School Bus is revving its engine for the new school year. Hop on for the first ride Thursday, September 8th.
For those of you unfamiliar with these walks, here is the synopsis. Parents have organized routes and times of departure from three neighborhoods (Glen Park, Noe Valley,
and Bernal Heights (St. Mary’s meeting point of the other two routes). See the bottom of the Families section of the school website for all details including maps with meeting times (http://www.sfschool.org/families/index.shtml). We are always looking for new chaperones and new routes too!
Between 8:00 and 8:05 AM the walkers funnel through St. Mary’s Park onto the 280 overpass, along Trumbull, onto Sweeney, down Bowdoin, and along Gaven Street. For safety, adults remain at the front of the walkers, and at the end, and children must remain between these adults. Adults also supervise each crosswalk. We generally arrive at SFS between 8:25 and 8:30 AM. Children and parents who walk are welcome to enjoy a beverage and breakfast snack upon arrival, and parents congregate and enjoy a conversational hike back to their neighborhoods. Family dogs seem to enjoy this walk as much as the humans do!
The actual Walking School Bus concept involves a family adult taking responsibility for a child or group of children for a few blocks at a time, handing them off to another responsible adult, and then returning to home themselves. We do operate the Elementary and Middle School Walking School Bus this way but feel that one-on-one parent/guardian escorts for preschool students is a safer approach for the younger child. Please note that if walking the entire distance from your neighborhood is too daunting, St. Mary’s Park is an ideal location to drive to, walk from with your child, and return to with other parents.
The Walking School Bus relies on parent participation and leadership. Please let us know if you are interested in becoming a chaperone. And, if your neighborhood does not have a Walking School Bus and you would like to start one, please contact Amy Alamar (amyalamar@gmail.com) or Maggie Weis (mweis@sfschool.org) and they would be delighted to help you set up your route and times!
