Extended Day

The San Francisco School extended day program offers an engaging variety of activities suited to preschool, elementary, and middle school students. The program opens at 7:30 a.m. each day and closes promptly at 6:00 p.m. Over 50% of students participate on a weekly basis in activities ranging from art projects and outdoor play for preschoolers, to musical instrument lessons and cooking classes for elementary school students, to Amnesty International and competitive athletics for middle school students. Parents may register students for daily attendance, specific enrichment activities, or last-minute drop-in sessions.

Please contact Vivian Walz at vwalz@sfschool.org or by phone at 415-239-5065 x305, if you have questions or suggestions regarding the extended day program.

PRESCHOOL

The preschool extended day program provides a warm and caring environment with a variety of activities.  The morning program includes child-selected activities, opportunities to learn Spanish, and free play in the spacious outdoors areas.  The afternoon program includes a circle time with singing and games; an afternoon snack; organized art activities; an indoor classroom with a complete array of preschool pastimes; and our expansive outdoor area where children can run, dig, build and swing.  In the morning and the afternoon, North and South Class preschool children expand their social horizons while they are in extended day together!

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The elementary school extended day program offers a variety of scheduled activities, such as indoor arts and crafts, musical instrument lessons, cooking, and chess. Students register in advance for most scheduled activities. In addition to these scheduled activities that vary daily, students have the opportunity each day to play the outdoor areas, meet in the library for board games and quiet conversation, or work on homework with teacher supervision. The School also provides space for private tutors to work with students during the extended day program.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

For many middle school students, the extended day program is a natural extension of their school day. Several activities integral to middle school life occur at this time, such as Yearbook, Amnesty International, and the interscholastic athletic program. Additionally, there are other scheduled activities, such as sewing, musical instrument lessons, and fencing. A Counselor-in-Training class offered this fall provides middle school students the opportunity to be trained as mentors to the elementary students, as well as to develop life skills that will take them through high school and beyond. In addition to the broad spectrum of scheduled activities, students can choose to socialize and play outdoors, gather in the library to read or talk quietly with friends, work with tutors, or work independently on homework with teacher supervision.
