Extended Day Program Guide

PRESCHOOL

The program opens at 7:30 a.m. each day and closes promptly at 6:00 p.m.  Preschool extended day provides a warm and caring environment with compelling arts and craft projects; exploration and play in the yard; and manipulative games and activities the child chooses to engage in indoors.  Before using the program, parents of preschool children should discuss their afternoon extended day requirements or changes with the classroom teacher.

In the morning, students must be signed in by their parents or caretakers (not siblings!).  From 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., parents or caretakers should park legally and walk the child in to the extended day room.  Children can be signed in during carpool from 8:30 to 9:05 when a staff member will accompany them into the extended day room.

The afternoon program begins at 3:05 with a circle time with singing and group games.  Afternoon snack is provided.  Students can participate in organized art activities, play in an indoor classroom with a complete array of preschool pastimes, or frolic in our expansive outdoor area where they can run, dig, build, and swing.  Parents should sign their child out each day by legibly indicating their name and the time they depart.  Parents who are volunteering or who attend committee meetings or conferences with teachers are not charged a fee and should indicate “Meeting w/ _____(fill in the blank)” on the sign out sheet.

ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL

The program opens at 7:30 a.m. each day and closes promptly at 6:00 p.m.  From 7:30 to 8:00 a.m. students congregate quietly in the Library and must sign in with the teacher.  From 8:00 to 8:30 students can be in the Yard or the Library.  There is no sign-in and no fee from 8:00 to 8:30.

Any student at school after 3:20 is in the extended day program.  Students can drop-in each day without being alerted by the parent.  It is more beneficial that the child know that they are staying at school that afternoon.  Elementary School students who drop-in will be signed into a “default” activity such as art or yard play.  Middle School students who drop-in will be signed into homework.

Students who are regularly in extended day on certain days or daily should be registered online in advance for classes and activities.  Listings are located on the website. You and your child should peruse the offerings and then submit your class registration online. Once registered to a class, your child may not withdraw without your written permission or you registering them for a new class on that afternoon. Some classes (e.g. baking) have a limited class size and will be removed from the online sign-up once that limit is reached.  Please do not sign your child up for special classes if they are only staying occasionally.

Parents or caretakers should sign the student out at the library desk by indicating the time and legible initials or name.

For Elementary School students, there are two categories of classes and activities: regular fee and activity fee.  Regular fee classes only have the daily fee which is based on the amount of time they are in extended day.  Activity fee classes have the daily fee plus an additional fee.  Yard play and art classes are regular fee.  Instrument lessons, language lessons, and fencing are examples of activity fee classes.  The extended day schedule outlines regular fee and activity fee classes in detail.

For Middle School students, there are three categories of classes and activities.  One is no fee in which students are representing the school or providing service to the community.  No fee applies from 3:20 to the end of the activity.  If the activity ends at 4:45 and a student remains on campus through 6:00, a one block charge will be applied.  Examples of this are athletic teams, Student Council, Yearbook, and Amnesty International. Regular fee classes have only the daily fee.  Activity fee classes have the daily fee and an additional fee based on cost.  Homework is an example of a regular fee class.  Tutoring and instrument lessons are examples of activity fee classes.

Students may not congregate or hang out outside of the school gate on Gaven Street. Students waiting for rides should wait inside the gate and should sign out only when their ride has arrived.  Cell phone etiquette and protocols are undergoing review but generally, all parents and visitors are asked to complete cell phone calls before entering the campus.  Students are asked to use cell phones only from 3:00 to 3:20, during carpool, to finalize their afternoon transportation.
