Walk in Thursday

The Walking School Bus is revving its engine for this school year. Hop on the first ride on Thursday, September 8, 2016.

For those of you unfamiliar with these walks, here is the synopsis. Parents organize routes and times of departure from their neighborhoods. For many neighborhoods northwest of the school, St. Mary’s Park is a meeting point with families funneling into the playground at Justin and Benton Avenues. Between 8:00 and 8:05am the walkers funnel through St. Mary’s Park onto the 280 overpass, along Trumbull, onto Sweeney, down Bowdoin, and along Gaven Street. For simplicity sake, we are encouraging all families who wish to participate to simply start out at St. Mary’s Park at 8:00am this year.

For safety, adults must be lead walkers with more adults following up in the rear, and children must remain between these adults. Adults also supervise each crosswalk. We generally arrive at SFS between 8:25 and 8:30am. Children and parents who walk are welcome to enjoy a beverage and breakfast snack upon arrival just inside the Preschool Entry Gate. Parents then congregate and enjoy a conversational hike back to their neighborhoods. Family dogs seem to enjoy this walk as much as the humans! Parent and Middle School student chaperones will receive a Walking School Bus windbreaker on Thursday, September 17th!

The Walking School Bus relies on parent participation and leadership. Please let us know if you are interested in becoming a chaperone. If your neighborhood does not have a Walking School Bus and you would like to start one, please contact SFS parent, Kelly Knight (kelly.knight@ucsf.edu) or Lower School Head, Maggie Weis (mweis@sfschool.org), and they would be delighted to help you set up your route and times! They also organize Middle School Student Chaperones and their training - ask your Middle Schooler if they would like to be a chaperone this year and direct them to Maggie please.
