The Roller Coaster project is the final stop for the science curriculum.

The culminating project for the 8th grade science class is a roller coaster unit. Working together in teams, the students are challenged to design and build a roller coaster track for a marble as they learn Newton’s Laws of Physics.

After diagraming, testing and building, the students also are encouraged to incorporate some creativity around a theme that they choose. This year’s project also incorporated more design thinking components - as students worked on prototypes and focused more on craftsmanship.

Once the roller coaster is finished each group calculates potential and kinetic energy for their design.

The whole project concludes with a trip to Great America. The students bring their roller coasters to participate in a design competition and get to experience the real thing themselves!
