Steve Morris
Head of School
Welcome to SFS!
A proud product of Pittsburgh, PA (yes, I still bleed Black and Gold), I first came to The San Francisco School as the Assistant Head of School in 2003. I have been Head of School since 2008. I am currently serving as the Chair of the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) Board of Directors.
I began my career in education literally the day after I graduated from college, and I have worked as a teacher and administrator in independent schools for the past 25 years. Like most lifelong independent school educators, I have held various positions at a few different schools including: the Dean of Multicultural Programs, teaching English, serving as the Community Service Learning Co-Director, and coaching varsity soccer at University High School. My teaching career began at Sewickley Academy in Pennsylvania. Prior to working in independent schools, I was the Executive Director of Summerbridge, Pittsburgh.
Beyond the classroom and school office, I have presented at conferences across the country on subjects ranging from school culture to faculty development and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice education. I have become a better Head of School by serving as a Trustee on numerous Boards including but not limited to: CAIS (member and Board Chair), The Urban School of San Francisco, The San Francisco Day School, California Teachers Development Collaborative (CATDC), Bay Area Teacher Training Initiative (BATTI), People of Color in Independent Schools (POCIS), and Youth Speaks, a San Francisco-based arts program.
I hold a Master of Arts degree in Education from Stanford University, where I completed The Principal’s Program. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in English at The College of Wooster in Ohio, with a minor in African American Studies. Most recently, I completed the Klingenstein Heads of Schools Program at Teachers College Columbia University.
