The art program at The San Francisco seeks to
build children's confidence, familiarity and skill in working with a
wide variety of materials in many disciplines. About one third of
the year is spent drawing and painting. The children work from life
and from their imaginations, using the principles of design to make
their artwork more visually compelling and meaningful.
The rest of
the year is spent in the areas of collage, paper maché, weaving,
sewing, 3-D construction, printmaking, mask and doll making, and
ceramics. Usually, experience in a particular discipline is
revisited multiple times within the five-year elementary art
experience, strengthening each student's understanding and
facility in that area. Children also learn about art in a
historical and cultural context, as it is relevant to their
studio work.
