The San
Francisco School provides a well-balanced
and nutritious family-style lunch five days a week for Preschool,
and Monday through Thursday for Elementary students. (Middle School
students bring a bag lunch daily and Elementary students bring lunch
on Fridays.) The School also provides a morning snack for all students,
and an afternoon snack for students staying in the Extended Care program.
The School lunch generally includes a hot main course and a salad or
vegetable, as well as bread, fruit and milk. A vegetarian alternative
is available daily. Most food is prepared from scratch, with minimum
use of salt or sugars. Children are encouraged to try new dishes; in
fact, the lunch program strives to keep palates growing with a wide
spectrum of foods and cooking styles.
The lunch program plays a significant role in The School's philosophy.
The family-style lunches maintain a family feeling and equalize the
playing field as to who has brought what for lunch. The hot lunch
program also makes an important statement about the ecology of bulk
buying, group cooking, and using real china and glasses. The total
experience of the school lunch is part of the Montessori practical life
experience: Preschool children participate in setting their tables,
pouring milk, cleaning their places, etc. Elementary children enjoy
the added responsibilities of rolling the lunch cart to the classroom,
serving lunch, and supervising cleanup. In both Preschool and
Elementary, students eat with classmates and teachers in the
classroom, enjoying the camaraderie as well as the food.
