In the sixth
grade art we start the year with drawn self-portraits and then wild
torn construction paper portraits. We move on to ceramics and create
glazed scenes- chairs, sofas, people and accessories that are then
incorporated into box "dioramas"- that we paint or wallpaper, decorate
with windows and mirrors, etc. Sewing "Woolies"- creatures from old
discarded sweaters, bright yarns and buttons is a sixth grade favorite.
It is a creative project that involves wrapping and tying more than
sewing.
The "Wood Sculpture Creatures" project began with the
construction of our new building and having an abundance of scrap
wood around, but has become a staple. Learning about tools and how
to construct sculptures that stand sturdy is the main objective.
When the sixth graders are studying Egypt in history, we make a clay
sarcophagus with an enclosed mummy - another favorite! Life drawing
with students posing for one another also happens each year.
Students begin with quick sketches, working up to longer poses and
with a variety of medium: pencil, charcoal, ink and paint.
Other projects vary from year to year depending upon inspiration,
but may include collage, still life painting, printmaking or a project
suggested by students. Featured artists, usually related to a
particular project, are discussed throughout the year. Students
also begin a personal portfolio, which includes descriptions and
reflections, and which stays with them throughout middle school.
