In eighth grade we begin the year with drawn self-portraits and painted portraits done in the style of a famous artist including a brief biography of the selected artist. "Ceramic Creatures" involves sculpting clay heads, hands, and feet, assembling these with wire and wood, and then padding this foundation and sewing costumes. This project involves various skills and is a favorite with the students.

Life drawing from student poses happens each year, beginning with quick sketches and working up to longer poses and some with a variety of media: pencil, charcoal, ink or paint. In 8th grade students are required to do a sculpture - wood, scrap metal or clay- their choice. They appreciate having the opportunity to choose their own medium for this project. Students also study basic one and two point perspective drawing, culminating in the design of a building or cityscape.

Other projects vary from year to year depending upon inspiration, but may include collage, still life painting, printmaking or a project suggested by students. Featured artists, usually related to a particular project, are discussed throughout the year. Students also continue a personal portfolio begun in sixth grade, which includes descriptions and reflections, which they take home at the end of the year.
