Middle school PE is taught in individual instruction groups of 14-16 kids per class. The benefits of having such a small class are the one-on-one instruction and the personalized care. We start the year with group games and team building challenges to get the new middle school students familiar with their new classmates. We then get more into individual and team sports as time goes on. The sports that we cover include: team building activities, Ultimate Frisbee, and volleyball in the fall. In the winter we go in depth with basketball, as well as wrestling, yarn ball, European team handball, lacrosse, and hockey. In the spring, we focus primarily on soccer, football, kickball, stickball, capture the flag, Frisbee golf, badminton, and tennis.
We still continue to run the president’s physical fitness challenge. This includes the kids being tested on the mile run, shuttle run, sit-reach, sit-ups, and push-ups. The older kids then run an Olympics day with the younger elementary students. The 8th grade is also in charge of running the haunted house on Halloween.
The San Francisco School is part of the Independent School Athletic League and competes with other independent schools in both co-ed volleyball and cross- country in the fall. In the winter basketball is offered in the ISAL, CYO, and JCC leagues, both for boys and girls. In the spring, we compete in the ISAL in co-ed futsal soccer and in an arena flag football league through the park and recreation department.
In the fall, the 8th graders are involved in a ropes course at Fort Miley. In the spring the 7th go to mission cliffs for a day of climbing. There are also sport camps offered in the summer time.
Middle School health curriculum is taught by the physical education teacher as well as both science teachers and the school counselor. The 6th grade curriculum covers the basics of nutrition and the 3 top causes of preventable death in America. The kids learn about the risks of smoking, obesity, alcohol, and HIV prevention in a comprehensive 10-week course. The 7th and 8th will go more into depth about anatomy, sexually transmitted infections, contraception, decision making, peer pressure, drugs, and go more in depth into nutrition. The Health curriculum is designed to work with science, advisory, and special sessions with the school counselor to offer a complete health class.
