Preschool & Kindergarten Daily Activities
Each day offers a mix of regular, scheduled activities, with plenty of time set aside to study a butterfly in the yard or create a funky new dance with friends. Here’s a snapshot of a day in the life of a preschool student at The San Francisco School.
Indoor Work Time Children have multiple opportunities each day to work on age-appropriate math, language, writing, art, dramatic play and science projects as well as Montessori-based practical life and sensorial activities. Though teachers may guide a child toward an activity, this is a time for self-directed, concentrated work. Two mornings a week though, games, art projects, and movement are conducted in Spanish for each age group. Indoor or Outdoor Time Both the North and South preschool classrooms, as they are known, have their own distinct outdoor spaces where children can challenge themselves physically and hone their social skills with their peer group. Outdoor activities include crate building, parallel bars, playing with sand toys, gardening, as well as zipping around the yard on trikes, or making up a game of tag or hide-and-go-seek. Directed art activities are often an option. Children themselves make the choice throughout this period to engage in an activity indoors or outdoors. Morning Circle or Group Time This is a time when teachers lead the children in music, stories, and games, as well as “the sound of the week,” a fundamental aspect of learning to read. They guide the children through problem solving and encourage self-esteem by giving each child an opportunity to speak in a group setting. Snack and Social Time The school provides a healthy snack each day. Children share in the responsibility of serving and cleaning up. Time with Specialist Teachers or Outside Time Students work in small age level groups with specialists in Art, Music, and Physical Education programs, all of which are offered regularly starting in the preschool. Lunch and Social Time A delicious and well-balanced lunch is served daily. (All dairy at the school is now organic and SF School is committed to increasing the number of environmentally friendly foods it serves.) The preschool children participate in setting their tables, pouring milk and cleaning their places. Students eat with classmates and teachers in the classroom, enjoying the camaraderie as well as the food. Nap The youngest group retires to the nap/day care room for about an hour while the older children play outside or do more advanced work in the classroom. Afternoon Circle The focus for this gathering is on Science, Social Studies/Culture, and Math. Afternoon Indoor Work Time Hands-on projects and activities extended from Afternoon Circle are continued in the classroom. Home Time As the children get ready for dismissal, they cooperate by sharing communal jobs and preparing the classroom for the next school day.
