The San Francisco School provides a variety of competitive athletic opportunities. All students at a grade level are invited to participate in the School's athletic teams. There are no tryouts or cuts. Players attending practices regularly and making the effort to progress are all guaranteed 50% playing time in the games. Parents who organize teams on their own are urged to follow these same guidelines. In the fall, the School offers interscholastic cross country and volleyball for middle school students. In the winter, interscholastic basketball is offered for fourth through eighth graders. In the spring, interscholastic futsal soccer is offered for middle school students. In addition, for a fee, the extended day program offers opportunities to participate in intramural archery, fencing, floor hockey, newcomb, whiffleball, kickball, flag or arena football, and tumbling. The middle school primarily competes in The San Francisco Athletic League (SFAL) with a variety of small independent schools in the city. The fourth through sixth grade basketball teams participate in either the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) or the Jewish Community Center (JCC). Prior to the season, students receive explanations of the differences between the leagues (e.g. weekend versus afternoon games, variations in rules) and are asked to determine which league best suits the majority of players. Coaches decide the practice schedule by asking for student availability and then choosing afternoons which suit the greatest number of players. Lower school teams are provided with coaches, uniforms, equipment, and practice space one afternoon a week. Middle school teams are provided with coaches, uniforms, equipment, and practice space at least two afternoons a week. Many lower school grades have parent-organized teams in sports such as soccer, football, baseball, swimming, and basketball. Room Parents should be consulted for information regarding these teams. The School does not provide coaches, uniforms, equipment or practice space for these teams.
The San Francisco School’s philosophy is that all students have a right to play! The games belong to the child. The joy of participating in a healthy pursuit occurs from the moment of donning the uniform to the last high five and should not be based only on the final score. As such, we ask that students learn to distinguish success as what they learned in the game, what new skill they utilized, and the advantages or disadvantages of strategies employed. We believe that our focus on skill and fitness development, understanding of team effort and strategies and joyful participation naturally lead to progress and thus, we are proud to share accomplishments from recent years. 2008 2007 2006 2005 2004 |
