2017 Equity and Social Justice Summer Reading List

We are happy to share our Third Annual 2017 Equity and Social Justice Summer Reading List, which comes out of a partnership between the school’s Diversity Committee and staff. As many of you know, we have been working closely with Professor Miguel Lopez for the past two and a half years. Initially his work helped us strengthen our equity and social justice reading and literacy curriculum from PS/K-8th grade. This year, Dr. Lopez worked with various members of our faculty (1st-8th grade) to develop integrated grade-level curricula that are both “horizontal” (i.e., integrates the arts, music, Spanish with the core curriculum) and “vertical” (i.e., a theme—perhaps gender—that is woven across the grades).

You can read more about why we chose the theme of refugees and how it relates to the work we do at SFS here.

Our staff has benefited greatly from our partnership with Dr. Lopez, and we hope that you have a chance to take advantage of this incredibly relevant and timely reading list. Please feel free to share this, as we believe it is a valuable resource.
