We are thrilled to announce that the School has hired Carly Reiter to be the Director of Design, Engineering, and Technology (DDET) starting July 1, 2019. The School was fortunate to have an expansive pool of talented applicants from across the country for this position, which allowed for a rich hiring and deliberation process. As you may know, this is a brand new position for our school. With the upcoming retirement of our current Director of Technology, Steve Rubin, we had the opportunity to restructure our technology staffing. In addition to the DDET position, starting next year, our networking/IT will be managed offsite, and Afandie Winter will remain as our Technology Assistant.

Carly, who currently resides in Seattle, WA, received her Bachelor of Science in Zoology from the University of Florida and her Masters of Science in Education from City University of New York. She comes to The San Francisco School with more than 15 years of teaching, administrative, and deep STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) experience. Her most recent school tenure was at Seattle Girls School where she led various efforts and held many roles including (but not limited to):

  • Serving as the Director of Academic Technology and the Dean of Academic Innovation
  • Teaching various classes including: 5th Grade General Science and Technology, 7th Grade Physical Science, 8th Grade Forensics, 5th - 8th Grade Computer Science, and 8th Grade Engineering, Design, & Entrepreneurship
  • Creating and managing all aspects of the STEAM Program (integrated across all subjects, electives, and summer camps)
  • Serving as the Accreditation Coordinator, Master Schedule manager, and Co-Chair of the Curriculum Council
  • Leading Student Affinity Groups - Banana Splits (for students with divorced parents) and Jewish Affinity

This year, Carly stepped away from the school world and spent the first six months of the year fully immersed in the world of Software Engineering. She participated in the Ada Developers Academy, where she studied full-stack web development. She is currently consulting with the global educational technology firm Makeblock, to develop standards-based robotics and computer science curriculum for elementary and middle school classrooms across the United States. She has also been supporting the University Prep School as they launch a month-long Engineering and Design Intensive for 9th-12th graders, focusing primarily on the Designing for Inclusivity and Electrical Engineering portions of the course.

In speaking with Carly and her various references, it became clear that SFS is the perfect match for someone with her experience and educational philosophy - one which falls directly in line with the mission of our school. Each reference spoke to the fact that Carly is ready for this role. We are thrilled to have Carly and her two cats (Coyote George the Riverpig and Squid Nelson) become a part of our community. We are just beginning to craft her transition plan, and perhaps she will be able to spend some time with us before we officially break for the summer.

We are excited about the new opportunities that this position will provide for our students and faculty next year and beyond, and look forward to partnering with Carly to deepen our STEAM program.

In closing, thank you to those of you who participated in the “day of” candidate visits. Furthermore, thank you to the Hiring Committee who devoted an extensive amount of time and energy to this process. Please help us in welcoming Carly to The San Francisco School!
