The Board of Trustees provides strategic oversight, sets goals, guides policy, finances, and leadership, ensuring alignment with SFS’s mission.
The Board of Trustees focuses on long-range goals and plans, hiring and evaluating the Head of School, policy considerations, and fiscal management including budgeting and fundraising. The board’s role is to focus on strategic oversight, ensuring that these operations align with the mission and values of SFS.
Trustees are representative of the SFS community's diversity and include parenting adults, faculty, staff, the Head of School, and external community members. External members are often alumni, alumni parents, administrators from other local independent schools, leaders in the Portola and surrounding areas, and representatives from relevant sectors. Staff members serve two-year terms, and all other members join for at least one three-year term.
In addition to meeting monthly as a full board, trustees may serve alongside other parenting adults and staff on board committees and special-purpose task forces. New trustees are nominated every year by the school community. Candidates are interviewed and recommended as a slate by the Nominating Committee based on mission-alignment, skills and experience, prior school involvement, and board diversity goals. The slate of new trustees are ultimately approved by board vote.
