The Start of SFS
In 1966, The San Francisco School was founded in a church basement on Woolsey Street, just a few blocks from our current location. Originally known as The San Francisco Montessori School, the fledgling community expanded rapidly, and in 1969, purchased the property at 300 Gaven Street.
Where Learning Meets Adventure
Our 1.6 acre campus has changed over time with the construction of the Herbst Building, the Edeli Building, and the Steve Morris Community Center as well as the acquisition of 307 and 311 Gaven Street. for administrative offices. The School also created the Adventure Playground, a unique terraced garden space that includes a field station, a gazebo, a barn, an expansive garden, and a 50 foot slide!

Blending Tradition with Innovation
Outdoor spaces are interspersed throughout the campus, such as the North Yard for the preschool, South Yard for kindergarten and 1st grade, the middle school terrace, the courtyard, and the greentop. Recent renovations have updated the preschool, kindergarten, and 1st grade classrooms as well as the music room. The campus has unique learning spaces such as the Learning Commons and the Workshop.
